Fat tire electric bikes are rapidly gaining popularity among electric bike enthusiasts. There is a very good reason why this is so. Electric bikes with “fat” tires are versatile enough to be compatible with several surfaces, including sand, pavement, and dirt. Fat tires are typically wider than regular bike tires. Regular tires typically have widths of 2 to 3 inches, while fat tires are usually more than 4 inches. Fat tires also allow lower inflation pressures, which enables more surface contact with uneven surfaces.
Juiced Bikes makes a number of quality electric bikes in the $1000 to $2000 range. Their fat tire offering is the RipCurrent S. This model comes in two frame types: a step-through version and a step-over version. The specs for the different frame versions are identical, but the color options are different. The step-over frame comes in red or black, and the step-through frame comes in black, brushed aluminum, yellow, and light blue.
This bike is considered a Class 3 bike with a top assisted speed of 28 mph. The company says it can be stepped down to a Class 2 bike by the owner if desired or even bumped up to Race Track Mode with a maximum 30 mph in Pedal Assist. As always be aware of local laws regarding the local ordinances of different classes in your location. The geared hub motor is a powerful 1000W Bafang motor (maximum 1300W). The large-capacity battery is a G2 52V 192Ah (995 Wh) compatible with the PowerShift docking system. A 2 amp charger is included. The battery carries a UL-2271 certification, attesting to its durability, longevity, and fire protection. Not all companies go the extra mile to achieve this certification. This combination can produce a range of up to 70 miles. Although the bike does not have integrated GPS, the battery has a hidden compartment for an Apple AirTag or similar tracking device.
The bike also includes a 50 lb. capacity rear rack, fenders, hydraulic disc brakes, a 1050-lumen headlight, red taillight, and a bell. Mirrors are optional. Electronics features include a highly sensitive torque assist and cadence pedal sensor and a highly customizable 120 x 64 pixel LCD screen. There is a speed limiter that is programmable and a cruise control feature that will maintain any speed below 20 mph until the brake is applied or the throttle is changed. Like many e-bikes, it also has a Walk Function.
Mechanically, the fork is air suspension, and the transmission is 9 speed with a 1128 link chain. The seat is gel, and the post is 31.6 mm with a quick-release feature. Mudguards are included. The weight with battery is a hefty 73 lbs. and the weight capacity is a typical 300 lbs.
