Tandem Electric Bikes: What You Need to Know

Electric bikes are rapidly increasing in popularity for several reasons. They can be adequate substitutions for commuting, eliminating many of the hassles of car commuting, and are better for the environment. They also can enhance touring and exercise routines, adding a bit of “juice” when fatigue sets in. They can also enhance extreme uses by assisting the rider get through rough or challenging terrain.

What About Tandem Bikes?

But what if your rides always or mostly involve a companion? Imagine taking a leisurely ride in the neighborhood with a spouse or loved one. Having a partner along can not only be fun, but it can enhance safety in case one person has an issue. One option is of course to purchase a separate bike for each rider. There is an alternative that might be a little cheaper if you don’t mind cooperative effort. This is where the tandem electric bike comes in. Tandem bikes (bikes with frames designed for two riders) are not new, but electric versions are relatively new, and not many bike makers are making them.

Do They Sell Tandem Electric Bikes?

I have researched the market and found 3 good options. They are made by Micargi Bicycles, Pedego Electric Bikes, and Mobility Bikes. They are all in the same price range and are generally less expensive than buying 2 bikes of the same quality. I have included a chart of the key specs for each bike.

Pros:

  • Having a partner can be fun
  • Effort can be shared
  • Cheaper than buying two bikes
  • Bonding and conversation
  • Combined effort makes difficult terrain easier

Cons:

  • You are “locked together”
  • The same motors used for single riders are used, meaning power assist may not be as noticeable
  • Lower range since the weight of two people consumes power faster
  • Harder to store since they are longer
  • Riders may have different levels of fitness
  • Accidents will naturally involve both riders

Other Considerations:

  • Do you always ride together?
  • Do you both like the same terrain or locale?

If you find yourself often riding with a partner and are looking into electric bikes, tandem bikes provide an interesting, if not affordable, option.
